Independent Living in Practice - How to make a real difference (Stage 1)
Training delivered by:
Target audience
People working in health and social care, housing, education & employment, transport and other practitioners working closely with disabled people
Learning aim
To equip practitioners with the knowledge and relationship skills needed to design and deliver services that enable disabled people to live independently
Learning outcomes
The learner will gain an understanding of:
- Disabled people’s experience of barriers to gaining Independent Living
- What disablement means in reality and how this effects individuals day to day living
- What Independent Living is and its complexities
- How to communicate with, and relate to, disabled people effectively
The learner will gain a working knowledge of:
- Disabled people’s history and culture
- The barriers to participation, involvement and inclusion for disabled people
- Current disability legislation, rights and policy
- The various models of disability and the concept of Independent Living
The learner will be able to:
- Enable disabled people to have more power and control over their personal situation
- Observe current practice and indentify areas for change within their own teams and organisations
- Identify practical changes that support independent living for disabled people
- Build practitioners' networks for on-going research, resources and support
