Participation networks – free, practical peer support for practitioners in Wales

9 Mar 2010

In February Participation Cymru facilitated two participation networks in South Wales; the South West network in Carmarthen 17 February, and the South East network in Pontypridd on 24 February. Both events were attended by a broad range of participants from public and third sector organisations within Wales.

"Well organised with good information. Beneficial for future use" - Participant

Participants had the opportunity to meet other practitioners working within their area and made valuable links. Through a session where individuals shared their current work and issues arising, connections were made and people arranged to meet up outside of the meeting to take forward areas of work together.

Learning styles

Network 1One of the session explored how learning styles might impact on how people engage. We each completed the Honey and Mumford learning styles questionnaire and found out which learning style we have a preference for, before thinking about the types of engagement activities which may be more suitable for individuals with different learning styles. As a group we explored how offering a range of activities ensures that all participants have an opportunity to engage, and participants began to identify how they may use different techniques in future.

"Very good and informative. Could be a really good group that grows in size, experience and skills" – Participant

World Cafe

Network 2Many people have heard of the World Cafe method, but have not experienced or run one. The networks provided a practical look at the World Cafe method, with the group setting up and running one, looking at the issue of using technology in engagement/consultation. This led to lively conversations about the opportunities and challenges of using ICT in engagement work. A plenary was held, then the group evaluated their experience of the method, brainstorming ideas about how they could adapt it for their own needs and how to do things differently.

"Really learnt a lot, liked doing practical things we can use" – Participant

Problem sharing

Over lunch practitioners shared problems and issues they are experiencing, and invited other participants help them by sharing their experiences of similar issues and ideas for moving things forward. It can be difficult working in isolation as a practitioner, and the networks provide an opportunity to share issues with other practitioners who are often experiencing the same challenges, or have dealt with them previously.

Network 3Practitioner networks are lively, participatory workshops which provide an opportunity for peers to engage, share and support each other.
There are practitioner networks across Wales which are open to all trained practitioners. They provide an invaluable opportunity to:

  • - Meet other practitioners in your area
  • - Share good practice
  • - Share ideas
  • - Problem solve
  • - Develop participatory skills
  • - Acquire new skills

"Very positive look forward to the next" – Participant
