New mutualism a decade on: a Welsh response
20 Oct 2009Friday 30 October 2009, Glamorgan building, Cardiff University
New mutualism emerged at the end the 1990s as part of New Labour’s Third Way thinking. It was suggested that, rather than basing policy on ideology, the focus should be on producing mutualist outcomes. The new mutualism would succeed because it worked. But the vision rapidly faded, barely lasting a year into New Labour’s first term. This conference asks whether the current recession can provide a fresh opportunity for a mutualist approach to service delivery and economic development in Wales. It explores how mutualism is already being put into practice in a wide variety of initiatives across Wales. Seasoned practitioners will consider how mutualism can become a viable model for businesses and communities throughout the country.
